Safety Boats Wanted!

The safety of our paddlers is our top priority. That said, the IOS Invitational event would not be possible without the commitment and support of our safety boat captains and their crews.

While forming a loose parameter around our paddlers, our safety boat crews are there primarily to shield participants from boat traffic and assist in the event of an emergency. As a rule of thumb, we strive to keep a 2:1 ration between paddlers and safety boats.

While we embrace the “more safety boats the better” motto, we prefer to have safety boats that are capable of transporting two paddlers (in addition to crews) and their equipment if necessary.

Safety Boat Logistics

Safety boats are asked to be at the green mile marker (C1A) off Pirates Cove Beach by no later than 6:00 am. This year, all paddle team captains will be equipped with a marine VHF radio so we’ll be able to communicate with safety boats more easily to coordinate meet ups. Unless otherwise directed prior to the start of the paddle, all radio communication between boats and paddlers will be conducted on Channel 16.
